First off, starting a business is a lot of work. If you're at the beginning of the process you're probably thinking "Okay, I have my business plan, I registered my business name, I have my tax ID number and worked out all the legal necessities. Now I'm ready to start the branding process!" If this is you then you are ready, possibly even sleep deprived, but ready none the less to get your business off the ground. So how do you go about creating an identity for your brand? Just follow these four easy steps ...
How to START The branding Process
Step 1: Fill Out a Branding Questionnaire
Even though you really want to you can't just jump into picking pretty fronts or colors for your logo. Keep in mind that cohesive branding is a process and to be successful you need to understand why you're in business and how you want to be perceived by potential customers. So take the time and give thought into what makes you, you!
I've created a helpful branding questionnaire to get you started with the branding process. I have my clients complete this questionnaire prior to starting their project. I guarentee that my FREE 6-question guide will help you get to the heart of your business. (I filled it out when I created my redesign). To access my questionnaire all you need to do is subscribe to my FREE resource library. My library contains a bunch of helpful worksheets, printables, guides and templates!
Step 2: Look For Inspiration
Now that you've done the hard (sometimes stressful) part it's time to get your creative juices flowing. Start by creating a Pinterest board and label it Identity Ideas. Now find pictures that represent the three words that you picked in the branding questionnaire (question 5) to describe your style. Don’t limit yourself to a certain amount of pictures. Revisit your pins occasionally to make sure you don’t stray from those three words.
Step 3: Work With a Designer
It's time to bring your vision to life. With your questionnaire and Pinterest board you have all the tools you need to successfully explain your vision to the graphic designer. If you choose to work with me I'll go over the questionnaire in detail with you and create an inspiration board from your pins. This board is extremely helpful in the design process. I keep the image on my screen while designing your logo for clear direction.
Step 4: Create Strong Print & Digital Collateral
Yeah! You have a logo! While clearly excited that you've come this far and you are realizing the dream of opening your own business is becoming a reality you still have a ways to go. Keep pushing forward by establishing a cohesive brand through print material (business cards, postcards, etc) and digital collateral (social branding, email templates, blog graphics, etc). Lastly, you’ll need a website to bring it all together.
